The Woman I Don’t Want To Be February 23, 2009

Medical education is as much what to do as what not to.  Colleagiality is important; healthcare providers work just as much with each other as with patients and families.  Here are three observations of what I hope never to do:

– The physician assistant (PA) who is flatly uninterested in what her teammates think is ethically right.

– The nurse who speaks complains about an intern who “took too long” to place a line, though never to his face.

– The attending physician (from a different service) who reproves a resident for a mistake in front of the rest of his team, ignoring any discretion or social etiquette.

To these people, I say teach me, don’t embarrass me or disregard the fact that I am still learning.  We are here to improve patient’s care, not to be unkind to our teammates.

And Now For Something Completely Different January 30, 2009

I’m a bit of an airplane nerd, so I was really excited to fly in an Emirates Airbus 380 last October.  With all the traveling I’ve been doing lately, I was inspired to finally post photos of the plane – the crew was nice enough to let us look upstairs once we arrived back in New York.  Included in the gallery below are a couple shots in coach (the bulkhead seats had a lot of legroom!), the stairs in the front and back, first class (including the shower), and business class (including the bar).  The ride was smooth, and I look forward to seeing if Boeing’s Dreamliner (787) will be a competitive product.

Well… I graduate from medical school in 2009.  On the one hand, I can’t believe it’s been four years (well, barely 3 and a half thus far), but on the other, a lot of sweat and stress have gone into this.  I hope the coming year is amazing, healthy, and safe for everyone.

Though I respect and appreciate our troops, I just can’t support the administration that’s put them in harm’s way. Are we really accomplishing anything battling the pseudo-entity of terrorism? Don’t get me wrong; having been in New York on 9/11, the prospect of another attack on American soil terrifies me. But all we’ve proved in this war is that our government consistently lies (getting us into Iraq in the first place), and even though Americans don’t approve, no one has felt motivated to bring about change. Why was sex so much more of a scandal back in the 90’s? It seems like we’d rather focus our energies on complaining about the cost of gasoline, who will win the Democratic nomination, or who won American Idol. Isn’t there more to American culture?

Yes, that means one year from tomorrow, I’ll be graduating from medical school.

Well, in the meantime, I had one damn good day today.

Despite the wording of the email, it turns out that what seemed to be an offer to study in Iowa was not an offer but a flattering (and apparently generic) invitation to apply to their program. After a week of thinking hard about whether or not to take time off from medical school, this was quite a slap in the face. I think I would rather have not gotten my hopes up than to have been called outstanding and then subsequently “not in the top three.” As for the other programs, it’s amazing how in-bred they are: Though they accept applications from other schools, they only seem to offer positions to their own students…
